The Impact of Anxiety on Our Lives
Diseases are embedded into human life. One of these diseases is anxiety. Anxiety is a feeling that causes uneasiness and fear.
Many people experience anxiety daily from asking people to help you with locating cereal in a grocery store, to asking your waiter for some extra sugar on top of your dessert. Anxiety is a part of everyday life.
Most commonly, anxiety is seen in schools, especially high schools. Anxiety is there, from the fear of doing well on your pop quiz to performing well under pressure in sports.
The problem is that anxiety can affect people even when they aren’t under pressure. Some people have severe anxiety, which causes them to feel fear even for the slightest of reasons. This affects many people in the world, especially in the U.S.A. In 2023, more than 40 million Americans were reported to have an anxiety disorder. That is about 19.1% of the U.S. population that suffers from anxiety, yet there are still some people who haven’t even tested for a disorder making that number higher. Around 32.2% of the U.S.A.’s population has anxiety symptoms, leading to more people seeking medical attention.(Forbes)
Anxiety can also lead many people to depression, which is why depression symptoms and anxiety symptoms are reported together. People who suffer from anxiety can have feelings that interfere with daily work, causing them to struggle at places of work, or even in public. Without anyone to reach out to, many people with anxiety disorders try to keep to contain their struggles with anxiety but aren’t successful in doing so. This causes more people to feel alone in this struggle. Fortunately, this struggle can be managed if people struggling begin to speak up for themselves. For example, if Bob is struggling with a social anxiety disorder, where he is afraid to talk to people, he can go to the doctor to ask for help. If he wants something that he can do from home he could adapt to good habits to help cope with anxiety. Bob could get adequate sleep, limit caffeine intake, or practice meditation. If you are struggling with anxiety don’t go into your room and do nothing. Instead, reach out for help because many would love to help. Also, practice good habits to get a sense of control over your body.
Anxiety comes in many different forms.
Some common anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and various phobia-related disorders. GAD or generalized anxiety disorder, is where a person feels a constant feeling of fear and dread throughout their life. This could last for months or even years. People with GAD often feel restless and feel very irritated by everything. People with a panic disorder often have a panic attack after exposure to anxiety for a certain amount of time.
Some people with panic disorder will have panic attacks several times a day or even a few times a year. It depends on the person, and how much stress they can handle due to anxiety. Social anxiety disorder is where a person feels intense fear that someone is looking at them, or they fear getting into conversations. This can affect how people go to work or school and talk to colleagues. People with this disorder feel as if interacting with other people is out of their control and are afraid of mostly what people will think of them.
The last disorder, phobia-related disorders, is where a person fears a lot of fear over some object, or living thing that they feel stressed when they see it. For example, a person afraid of spiders, or arachnophobia, will feel very stressed out when a person says that there is a spider in the room. Anxiety seems to have many ‘variants’, but there isn’t an issue with that because, through the use of therapy and good habits, many people can overcome the problem that anxiety poses to them.
Even though many people worry about anxiety there is no reason to fear. Many people struggle with anxiety, which is why organizations such as ADAA and NAMI can help you or your loved ones with anxiety. The main thing is that if you know someone who is struggling with anxiety, don’t hesitate to reach out for help, and ask for it.
