Engaging Students

Harnessing the Power of Contests to Engage Students in Health Promotion

In today’s educational landscape, fostering student engagement is more important than ever. Contests are a dynamic tool to inspire and involve students, offering innovative approaches to capture their interest and enthusiasm. Research indicates that students who participate in academic contests often demonstrate improved performance in related subject areas. For example, Johnson and Turner (2021) found that participation in academic competitions positively correlated with enhanced student achievement, suggesting that these contests provide valuable academic concept reinforcement. Additionally, a 2023 study by Lee and Martin found that students who regularly participated in contests developed skills and experiences beneficial for their career paths. Contests offer practical experience, leadership opportunities, and networking, contributing to student’s readiness for the workforce.

Research by Martinez and Singh (2022) highlights how well-designed contests can promote equity in education. Their study shows that inclusive contest designs can help bridge the gap for students from diverse backgrounds, ensuring more equitable opportunities for all participants. For instance, allowing flexibility in contests for both group and individual entries provides opportunities for collaboration while still engaging students who prefer to work alone. Designing contests to foster a growth mindset promotes active learning, and critical thinking, to apply and support the knowledge and skills to meet contest requirements.

It’s important to ensure that competitions remain supportive and constructive. Healthy competition can drive students to excel, increase effort and commitment, and encourage pride in their achievements. Recognition, whether through newspapers or assemblies, adds an extra layer of motivation.  Contest elements such as deadlines, competitive spirit, and tangible rewards, contests transform routine tasks into thrilling challenges. Contests create a sense of excitement, encourage active participation, foster healthy competition, promote collaboration, build real-world skills, enhance motivation through recognition, and offer diverse learning opportunities.

As educators and health promoters continue to seek innovative ways to engage students, contests stand out as a powerful tool for inspiring learning and personal growth. Recent health crises and state health plans have highlighted the importance of shifting our culture to promote health. Here are some contests that educators can incorporate into various subjects, including English composition, social studies, government, health, and physical education, to actively engage students in learning about health: /contest/.
