One Letter. Infinite Consequences: Hidden Dangers of E-bikes

Earlier this month, a 15-year-old lost his life after an e-bike collided with a motorcycle. His family hopes his legacy inspires kindness; however, this also serves as a heartbreaking reminder that e-bikes pose a major safety risk, especially to teenagers.

As a high school student at Downingtown STEM Academy, I have seen the growing popularity of e-bikes among teens. At first glance, e-bikes seem fun, healthy, and convenient, but many people, including myself, do not realize how dangerous they could be. We constantly think of the freedom they provide, ignoring the responsibility that comes with riding them.

In my opinion, many students underestimate e-bikes. When someone looks at this word, the first word that comes to mind is “bike”: healthy, convenient, and a great form of transportation, constantly causing people to forget the “E” before the “bike.” One letter. Infinite consequences. While traditional bikes reach speeds of about 12-14 miles per hour, e-bikes travel at 15.5-28 miles per hour, severely increasing the risk of a serious injury. As teens, we are not always self-aware of our surroundings, so giving us e-bikes that travel much faster than traditional bikes and require less effort to ride is not always the best option.

Beyond speed, there is another hidden hazard in riding e-bikes: traffic literacy. Many teens are not well aware of basic traffic rules while riding e-bikes, leading to wrong turns, riding against traffic, and failing to yield at intersections. Without understanding the traffic rules, teens are more likely to crash with cars, collide at intersections, and injure themselves and possibly others.

One way to address this issue is by raising awareness. When we raise public awareness about the dangers of e-bikes, students will start asking themselves if they are prepared to ride safely. As there are so many things that could go wrong while riding them, teens can start thinking about the consequences and whether they have the skills and knowledge required to ride e-bikes. By making informed decisions, we can have a safer community to live in.
