It is well known that diet is essential to keep the body well. Many believe that a healthy diet ensures physical wellness. Although this is valid, a healthy diet also ensures better mental health. In terms of overall health, diet is one of the most crucial aspects.

A “healthy” diet

What does a “healthy” diet consist of? The definition of healthy diet changes from person to person. There isn’t one specific diet that everyone has to follow in order to stay healthy. However, most diets should include the following:

  • Fruits & vegetables: They are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and fibers. Incorporating these into your diet can reduce the chances of heart diseases, strokes and some cancers.
  • Whole grains: They also contain a large amount of vitamins, minerals and fibers.
  • Fat-free or low-fat dairy products: They are good sources of proteins. Many products are also high in calcium, which keeps the bones healthy.
  • Lean meats, poultry: They contain large amounts of protein, which helps the body repair itself. They also contain amounts of minerals and vitamins including iron, zinc, and B vitamins
  • Beans, eggs & nuts: They are good sources of proteins, vitamins and minerals. They are also low in fat and high in fiber.  Nuts also are high in fiber, but they are also high in fat, so they must be eaten in moderation.
  • Limited amounts of saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars: High amounts increase the body’s cholesterol level, which increases the susceptibility to heart diseases. Frequent consumption leads to obesity and tooth decay. High amounts of sodium which increases the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Maintaining these diets can ensure good health and reduce the chances of health conditions. ***Are these “diets” or is it maintaining this way of life or eating healthy?

How Diet Affects Health

Scientifically speaking, foods with more nutritional value tend to reduce the brain’s oxidative stress. In other words, high-quality foods with minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants prevent the brain from becoming overstressed when producing oxygen.

Research suggests that diets that contain more refined sugars promote inflammation and more oxidative stress, which leads to impaired brain function and worse symptoms of mood disorders like depression.

Inside the gut, millions of bacteria produce chemicals that influence the messages that are sent to the brain. Two of these chemicals are dopamine and serotonin. When you eat high-quality food, the gut produces more “good” bacteria, which causes positive production of chemicals. Positive production leads to the brain receiving positive messages. This, in turn, will also reflect your mental state. When production is more negative, so will your mood.

Sticking to a nutrition-rich diet will allow you to have fewer mood swings and have a higher ability to focus. Diets with whole unprocessed foods have been found to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety as well.
